Body language
I love to explore the intersect of mind and body. It’s a quirk of mine that makes me a bit of a bore at parties, but I can’t help it. My fascination with selfcare is not to be confused with me thinking twice about beauty standards (I do not care for the popular idea of beauty). What interests me is how our bodies communicate with our minds, and how few of us ever learned to speak that language.
Myself included, I was writing about body language long before my own body started making a fuss with spasms, limpness, and pain. I meditated, practiced yoga, ran my 5 and 10 km rounds, and drank the occasional green smoothie. I could tell you what tight shoulders “meant.” Unfortunately knowing something isn’t the same as living by it. What finally helped wasn’t another workout or another article. It was asking myself what I actually needed and making sure I made an effort to adhere to my authentic needs. That’s how I learned my body is the purest reflection of myself, if I’m honest with my needs, my body is at ease. Since then I’ve had fewer episodes of nervous system dysregulation, and I wish I’d had these prompts years ago.
